Using sports tape as a pain management tool

Updated: May 30, 2021

Anyone who has suffered from chronic pain knows how debilitating it can be. Chronic pain is a complicated and multifactorial condition so treatment will vary depending on the needs of the individual.

One of the tools we use at Hand to Heal to treat a chronic pain condition is sports taping. The premise behind taping is to change the feedback received by the brain. The tape works to give a sense of support and stability. This message is then sent to the brain so the brain receives the message that the area is stable and it is safe to move so pain signals are not required.

Sports tape can be applied before an event. For example if you suffer from calf pain, achilles pain or pain from plantar fasciitis the area can be taped to reduce pain levels and protect the area before your run, event, game or competition.

Sports tape can be very effective in treatment of lower back pain, both acute and chronic. It can be applied at the end of your soft tissue treatment to provide a sense of stability after the protective muscle contractions have been released off.

Chronic shoulder pain is another very common condition that can lead to further disfunction and painful compensations in the neck and elbow. It is important to strengthen the shoulder after an injury. Often after the shoulder has sustained an injury the shoulder joint is never strengthened properly and turns into an ongoing chronic pain situation. Strengthening the shoulder helps to restore full function. Taping is an excellent tool in pain management whilst strengthening the shoulder and working at regaining full function.

Sports taping is an excellent tool that can be used in a number of different ways.
